The Smiley Library was built in 1918 and is located at 4501 West 46th Avenue in Denver. The 4,600 SF building is comprised of two levels. The project focus was to update the infrastructure as well as make adjustments to the space to increase functionality and reinforce the fact that the library is welcoming to all. The exterior was enhanced with new paint, new sidewalks, and a new roof. The landscape features interactive art by a local artist.
This renovation provided a refreshed community room with much-needed storage, built-in seating, and a sink to increase the ability to expand programming to “messier” activities. The staff were afforded a functional staff work room and a dedicated restroom. The two existing restrooms were completely renovated, including improved lighting and accessibility. Amenities like a study room and a bottle-filling water fountain were also added to the lower level. The study room exposes some of the original brick that was one of the favorite decorative elements of the community.
The upper level reading room was refreshed with a brighter color palette that allows the natural light to fill the space. The new service points also provide a new more approachable customer-staff experience. The custom woodwork on the service points was inspired by the original arched doorways. New furnishings provide opportunities for seating and computing.
The overall feel of the building is refreshed and incorporates 21st-century library space needs while respecting the distinctive historic characteristics of the building.
